Consciente ou inconscientemente, as criaturas são levadas a abreviar certos estados e a prolongar outros. Quando sofremos, quando estamos magoados, desejamos que esse estado acabe logo, ao passo que, se estamos felizes, bem gostaríamos que durasse eternamente. O que é normal. Infelizmente, essa tendência nem sempre se manifesta quando necessário, nem numa boa direção. Tratando-se de trabalhar, de se esforçar, de refletir, de se ligar ao Céu, queremos que acabe logo, ao passo que, na hora de comer, beber, ter distrações e prazeres, achamos que nunca dura o suficiente. Pois bem, não é esse o comportamento de um autêntico espiritualista.Ao experimentar uma sensação agradável, mas que não poderá proporcionar-lhe nenhum enriquecimento interior, um espiritualista abrevia sua duração ou mesmo a interrompe. Mas quando tem um trabalho ou um esforço a fazer, trata, pelo contrário, de prolongá-lo. Ele compreendeu toda a riqueza e toda a profundidade existentes em cada esforço, enquanto as alegrias e os prazeres muitas vezes servem apenas para anestesiá-lo, mantê-lo na fraqueza e afastá-lo da verdade.
Ante todas as possibilidades que se apresentam, adquira o habito de se perguntar: “Em que isso contribuirá para o meu progresso?” Ao verem que não vai dar em grande coisa, que será sobretudo um desperdício de tempo e de energias, não se detenham. A vida apresenta todo tipo de tentações, e se ainda não aprendemos a nos controlar suficientemente para resistir, sucumbimos, e depois nos arrependemos, por nos sentirmos enfraquecidos, aviltados. Seria possível evitar muitos erros se, antes de nos lançarmos numa aventura, disséssemos a nós mesmos: “Fazendo isso ou aquilo, estarei satisfazendo meus desejos, evidentemente, mas quais serão as repercussões de minha conduta em mim mesmo e nos que me cercam?” Aquele que não faz essas perguntas fica espantado com o que lhe acontece depois. Mas não deveria: o que lhe acontece era previsível, pois as consequências são previsíveis.
